Thursday - 9:20 A.M.

Delray pressed the spacebar on his computer keyboard and froze the video he was watching. After letting out a long sigh, he mumbled, “She’s got to see this,” and picked up his coffee cup. He thought about what he would say as he drained the last of his coffee. He knew the video would be challenging to watch and decided the conversation would be best had in his office as he picked up his phone and dialed Bridgette’s extension.

His call was answered on the third ring. Delray said, “You got a second, Bridgette? Can you come see me in my office?”

After putting the phone down, he used the time while he waited to reset the video to the right location.

A moment later, his rookie detective appeared in the doorway. “You wanted to see me, chief?”

“Come on in and close the door behind you, Bridgette. There’s something I want to show you.”

After Bridgette had settled into a chair opposite his desk, Delray said softly, “There’s been a breakthrough in the Bates case.” He pressed the spacebar on his computer. As the screen came to life, he swung it around to give Bridgette a better viewing angle. “This came in from Bolton police about an hour ago.”

They both watched as the tiny orange image of a man against a dark purple backdrop came to life. Bridgette frowned as she watched the man walk across the screen. “A thermal imaging camera.”

“Yes. This was taken from a stealth drone high above the Bolton State Forest.”

As they watched the man walk between trees, Delray added, “The man’s name is John Hanway. Bolton Police have had him under investigation for over four years as a person of interest in six murders. They’ve long suspected him of being a professional hitman, but they’ve never been able to prove anything. We circulated the video of the man leaving the building after Bates’s murder to other jurisdictions and got a hit from Bolton almost immediately. One of their guys recognized the man’s distinctive walk as being almost identical to Hanway’s.”

Bridgette kept her eyes focused on the computer screen. Even from a small camera several hundred feet up, Bridgette could still discern the man’s distinctive walk.

Delray continued, “They took the video to a judge who authorized an around-the-clock surveillance and a phone tap. Last night, they followed him at a safe distance out of the city to the Bolton State Forest. They put a drone up with an infrared camera, and this is what they observed.”

Bridgette watched as the man walked on. Without taking her eyes off the screen, she said, “He appears to be carrying something.”

“Yes. In a few more seconds, you’ll see what he’s up to.”

She watched as the man began pacing steps in a small open area of the forest before he bent down and appeared to start scraping at the ground. Bridgette cocked her head slightly to one side and watched for another minute until the man straightened up again. The orange figure seemed to grab something in both hands that didn’t emit a thermal image.
